Network triage in five commands
Work from the bottom of the stack up: is the machine configured, can it reach the gateway, can it reach the internet, can it resolve names.
| Question | Command | What a good result looks like |
|---|---|---|
| What IP do I have? | ipconfig /all | An address in your network range, not 169.254.x.x |
| Can I reach the gateway? | ping 192.168.1.1 | Replies within a few milliseconds, no timeouts |
| Can I reach the internet? | ping 8.8.8.8 | Replies, no timeouts |
| Does DNS resolve? | nslookup example.com | An IP address comes back |
| Where does traffic stop? | tracert example.com | Hops continue to the destination |
| Refresh a bad lease | ipconfig /release && ipconfig /renew | A new valid address appears |
